Swiss National Day falls on Saturday 1 August 2026. Festivities in Neuchâtel centre on the lakefront, with bonfires, speeches, music and the fireworks display typically starting around 22:00. The Jeunes-Rives esplanade and the surrounding lakeside paths draw large crowds from early evening.
Traffic restrictions come into force progressively from around 19:00. Most access roads to the lakefront are closed or heavily controlled, and car parks in the city fill completely within the first hour of the evening programme.
Getting there: before the fireworks
A taxi is the cleanest solution. Your driver drops you at an agreed point close to the lakefront — within easy walking distance of the viewing area — at whatever time you choose. No parking stress, no circling the city centre, no arriving late because every car park was full.

Getting back: the T2 rate
On the evening of 1 August, all taxi rides apply the T2 rate. T2 is the night and public holiday tariff:
- Base fare: CHF 6.50
- Rate per km: CHF 4.50
- Minimum fare: CHF 10.–
This rate applies from 20:00 to 06:00, on Sundays and on public holidays. As 1 August is both a Saturday night and a public holiday, T2 applies to all rides taken from the start of the evening.
For a typical return journey from the lakefront to a Neuchâtel address 3–4 km away, expect to pay CHF 20–28.
Post-fireworks: the busiest moment of the year
The period immediately after the fireworks — typically between 22:45 and 23:30 — is the single most-requested taxi moment in Neuchâtel each year. Thousands of people try to leave at the same time. Taxis, buses and private cars all compete for the same roads simultaneously.
The practical solution: book your return taxi in advance. Agree a pick-up point a short walk from the main crowd, and a time 10–15 minutes after the fireworks end. Your driver will be there, and you avoid the worst of the post-display chaos.
Tips for a stress-free National Day
- Book both your outward and return taxi at least 4–5 days before 1 August.
- Choose a quiet pick-up point — a street behind the lakefront, not the main promenade.
- Bring a light jacket — lake evenings can be cool, especially after 22:00.
